This month on Soph-obsessed I’m talking a lot about self-care. It’s something that our generation seems to neglect heavily especially mothers like myself. We spend our time looking after everyone else but failing to take care of ourselves enough! One way I like to incorporate some self-care into my day to day routine is with the use of essential oils.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are wonderful and have a whole array of uses from aromatherapy to relax or medicinal to aid the treatment of illnesses and ailments. For me I like to use different essential oils to relax and soothe my mind. Personally, scent plays a big role in my mood and the use of different essential oils can alter, uplift and change my mood and make me feel a whole world better! Some of my favourites are:
Peppermint Oil
If life gets a bit much I tend to feel a bit irritated. Sometimes everything and anything can irritate me. There is no rhyme or reason. If I’m honest it’s largely irrational but I feel like I just can’t shake it! I use a few drops of Peppermint essential oil in a diffuser and just sit calmly breathing in the vapour. I instantly feel relaxed and it helps me move past the irritable feeling and find a place that is much less tense and far more relaxed.
Lavender Oil
Whenever I am in periods of stress I lean toward Lavender essential oils. Sometimes I will have a diffuser in my office with a few Lavender drops in just to keep that sense of calm. It stops me allowing that stress to build up and over take my mood.
If ever I am going through periods of insomnia I will use some diluted Lavender essential oil on my pillow to help me sleep.
Eucalyptus Oil
Whenever I start to feel a bit stuffy or feel the start of a blocked nose I will diffuse some Eucalyptus essential oils to help clear the nasal passage. I also just love the fact that I feel like my mind becomes clearer and I feel mentally stronger. It’s great for relieving headaches and removing that head fog that sometimes comes over me!
Bergamot Oil
I’ve talked previously about my struggles with anxiety and the use of Bergamot essential oil really helps calm an anxiety attack and keep any feelings in check. It’s uplifting and comforting and a great essential oil to have around.
The Best Essential Oils
Essential oils are readily available but it’s important that the oils you choose are the best quality and not diluted or watered down if you want the most effective use. It’s important to check that you are purchasing an essential oil and not just a scented oil. Some places market their oils to appear like essential oils when they are not so be careful. You can get high quality essential oils at New Directions Aromatics and you can also find loads of information on different oils and their uses.
The very best thing about essential oils is that you can find the perfect one for each individual situation for use alone or combine them for a whole selection of options. What are your favourites essential oils?
