I’ve made it very clear in the past that I’m not a gym person. In fact, exercise and I aren’t the best of friends. I’d love nothing more than to be the type of person that catches the “gym bug” but alas I don’t even like using the toilet in the gym!! That being said as I looked back over 2019 I and set my goals for 2020, I decided with conviction that I was going to get fitter this year. On paper, it sounds easy, but for anyone getting back into exercise, you’ll know it can be tough!
My Journey
Let me be clear when I say that I have little desire to run a marathon, and when I say I want to get fit, it’s only to help elevate my lifestyle. I have too boisterous young children that have energy for days in the summer. I want to be the parent that can run around all day until the sunsets without feeling massively out of breath. Being fitter will improve my lifestyle and add benefit to my health which is essential if I want to be around to see these kids grow up.
In my efforts to get fitter, I have started taking part in four exercise classes each week. I have been doing it for four weeks now, and it is going really well. Initially, it was fierce; I was so unfit I wasn’t sure I would make it! If you want to get back into exercise then I’ve put together some tips that will help:
Find Something You Enjoy
I’m not a runner, and the idea of running makes me feel depressed! So when my friend started running three nights a week and invited me along, I knew it wasn’t for me! It’s essential to find something you will enjoy. If you don’t enjoy it, you definitely won’t stick to it.
Take It Easy
Even just a few weeks off exercise can impact your fitness so if you haven’t exercised in a while take it easy. There is no shame in taking a break or modifying an activity to something more manageable.
The First Day Is The Hardest
When I first started exercising again, that first-class almost killed me. I instantly regretted ever starting, and I felt like I was going to cough up my lungs. That is entirely normal when you push your body out of your fitness zone but that first day is definitely the hardest, but it does get easier.
You’ll Ache Afterwards
Your body is going to feel the work you put in the following day, so be kind to yourself. Make sure you stretch correctly before and after exercise and treat yourself to a hot bath.
Pace Yourself
As your fitness increases the intensity of your workout can also increase but make sure you pace yourself. You don’t want to be doing too much too soon.
Do you have any tips for getting back into exercise? I’d love if you shared them below!
