Let’s be honest 2020 has been an exhausting year so far. By the time September rolled around, I was ready for a full reset to be frank. With a year like we have just had, there is no wonder that many of us feel like we have lost momentum. So what should you do if you are running on empty?
So you are Running on Empty – Now What?
We all started this new year with momentum and drive which was soon zapped from us as we entered lockdown and even now as we adjust to this new normal. If you feel like you are running on empty, there are a few things you can do which might just help.
Take A Multivitamin
It’s no surprise really that most of us aren’t receiving our recommended daily intake of vitamins each day. Vitamin deficiency can contribute to general ill feeling, lethargy, lack of concentration and a whole host of medical issues. When your body is lacking in essential resource, it’s no wonder that you don’t feel on you’re A-game! Imagine a car running without oil, for example. Taking a multivitamin can help give your body the boost that it needs.
Drink Plenty of Water
Your body cannot function at full capacity if it is dehydrated! Drink enough water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and by doing so, your body will thank you. Dehydration causes headaches, lethargy, lack of concentration and yep you guessed it a whole host of medical issues!
Exercise
When the tank is empty, it seems counterproductive to get out there and push your body to exercise. Exercising stimulates the body into producing natural feel-good hormones. It also contributes to better quality sleep and can naturally improve energy levels!
Ditch the Caffeine
Listen, some days my blood type is coffee, but although it provides a temporary boost in stimulation it is short-lived, and the after-effects can make everything else much worse. Too much caffeine can impact sleep which in turn goes on to affect the following day too. Try and limit the amount of caffeine you consume each day; it’s like everything – it’s ok in moderation.
Analyse Your To-Do List
My To-Do List is as long as my arm and that in itself is overwhelming enough to make me want to hide under the duvet for a decade. The reality is I could scrap at least 75% of it. Go through your list and ditch anything that is not essential or get those quick jobs done and out of the way so you can scratch them off. Having a plan of what NEEDS doing is beneficial but be strict about not over facing yourself. The days feel so much more manageable when it’s not consumed with unnecessary noise.
Take Time For Self-Care
When you are running on empty life becomes about priority, and the first thing to be sacrificed is our self-care. Taking time for you is absolutely crucial, and in doing so, you will actually recharge your batteries rather than deplete them. Take a bath, use a face mask, read a book, meditate or just indulge in your favourite TV show without interruption.
Destress
Stress is an energy void. When the world feels a bit wild, it’s no surprise that stress is at an all-time high. It’s important to acknowledge when stress is present and eliminate it where possible. As previously mentioned, take time for self-care, but other stress-relieving tools could be journaling, talking through things with a friend or family member and not spreading yourself as thin. It’s worth remembering that stress is a normal part of life but if it starts to turn into a more serious issue and it starts to hinder your life, or you begin to feel depression – speak to somebody. A GP, friend or family member can all help you really don’t have to suffer in silence.
