My children are now eleven and four, and for the past few years, there have been numerous discussions, particularly between parents at my older boy’s school, about when the right time to tell the truth about Christmas is.
A few years ago, a friend of mine was quite direct in telling me I should reveal the truth about Christmas. Her children were nine and ten at the time, and she had shared the truth with them. My son was only seven at the time, and I was quite horrified at the suggestion. Christmas is all about the magic and the wonder. There seems a sudden rush in sharing ‘the truth’, but why make our children grow up faster than they need.
So, When Is The Right Time?
This is, of course, both a controversial and unique question. I believe everybody should do what they choose with their own family. Some parents, for example, have all of the presents from Father Christmas whilst others have one main gift from him. There are no rules, and no one size fits all. If revealing the truth about Christmas is right for your children and their ages, then you know best as their parent. I don’t think people should dictate to other parents what they should or shouldn’t do about anything, including this topic.
If you want to share the truth about Christmas, then no judgement here – just don’t spoil it for the children who do still believe. My husband always reminisces about when his Grandmother revealed the truth one day and completely through him through a hoop!
When do I think the right time to share the truth about Christmas is? Honestly? Never. I don’t actively lie to my children, of course, but I will never confirm or deny their suggestion that Christmas isn’t real. Nor will I. My parents still haven’t to this day revealed the truth to me – although I’m 34 now and not stupid, it’s still magical. I intend to keep up the façade even when my children are grown, and their grandchildren come to visit. There is something magical about never really speaking those words into existence.
If You Don’t Believe, You Don’t Receive
My eldest came home from school the other day, and he told me that after discussing it with his friends, he was certain of the truth. I simply told him – If you don’t believe, you don’t receive. There is a huge part of him that thinks he has it all sussed out, but without confirmation, he doesn’t fully know, and I like to keep that spark of magic alive.
Listen, you do you. If you want to tell the truth about Christmas, that’s your prerogative, and if you don’t – ditto. Everyone has their own reasoning for what they want or do not want to do. No need to justify or argue your point. That’s the great thing about this world – you can do exactly what you please. Either way, if you celebrate Christmas, I wish you and your family a merry Christmas, and if you don’t, happy holidays.
