Since Hugo was born, we have been exclusively breastfeeding, but recently we have begun to introduce some formula feeds to his diet. To make this process easier, we were kindly sent the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Day and Night to try out see how we got on below.
Times Change
Back when I was a baby, my parents would make up several formula bottles for the day and keep them in the fridge. It was the ‘norm’ both convenient and practical, and it meant that when your baby would scream for a feed, you had one ready and to hand. However as with everything new research meant that the guidelines on bottle feeding changed and it was announced that formula bottles should be made up as a when they are needed and discarded after a certain amount of time.
When I had Henry over seven years ago, I really struggled with this. We had gone from breastfeeding which is a very much ‘on demand’ concept to formula feeding, and I just couldn’t seem to prepare and cool the feeds quick enough. He would be screaming in hunger for a bottle, and it would take forever to reach a safe feeding temperature. If I tried to anticipate when he would want a feed, I was always wrong, and he would often then waste the bottle or just snack feed never getting a full bottle. We wasted so much formula, and it wasn’t a pleasant time for either of us. In the end, I purchased the premade formula bottles and although my wallet didn’t thank me my sanity certainly did, and it meant that I could just heat the right amount as and when he needed a feed.
Hugo
We have started to introduce formula into Hugo’s diet, but because of the suspected CMPA, he is on a specific dairy free formula prescribed by our GP. Unfortunately, they don’t make a premade bottle of this formula like they do with the regular cow’s milk based ones. Initially, this wasn’t a problem we were using the formula to ‘top up’ his breastfeeds so while the bottle was cooling, I would just breastfeed him as usual. However, as we started to introduce more feeds, we began to experience the same stresses we did with Henry while trying to cool the bottle in time.
When I first heard about the Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Day and Night, I thought it was such a smart idea. A machine that claims to prepare a bottle of milk in two minutes at the perfect drinking temperature is exactly what I needed but was it just too good to be true?
Tommee Tippee Perfect Prep Day and Night
You simply fill the water tank and the Perfect Prep Day and Night uses a unique filter to help remove bacteria and other impurities from the water. A shot of water over 70 degrees is then delivered into your bottle. This is essential as the formula powder is not sterile and therefore could contain bacteria and other nasties that we don’t want to pass on to our babies. After you have added your powder, you apply the lid and shake vigorously to dissolve the powder. Once dissolved the bottle goes back on, and the remaining amount of water is delivered at body temperature so that the formula is the perfect feeding temperature.
The Perfect Prep Day and Night is ideal for use in the middle of the night as it has a glow light which illuminates the water tank and machine perfectly. This means that you can refrain from turning on the main light and fumbling around in the dark. I’ve found this really helpful, and it means that Hugo doesn’t wake up fully because he thinks it is morning.
One of my favourite features is the digital display which allows you to scroll quickly and easily to select the amount of formula you want to make up. It’s easy to see in the dark, and you can also choose if you want to empty the machine, descale and clean with the touch of a button.
Our Thoughts
I’m not entirely sure how we ever survived without the Perfect Prep Day and Night. It makes feeding on demand easy and stress-free and making up a bottle is both faster and safer than with a kettle. We are already big Tommee Tippee fans, and we use their Closer to Nature bottles already, but the machine is compatible with most other bottles so no need to switch if you are already established with another brand.
The machine does make noise when making up a bottle it’s a hum like sound similar to a coffee machine but this really isn’t a problem, and I don’t think it would wake anyone up, but it is worth noting. The machine itself is really well made and light enough to transport when going away or to move to another room. I’d definitely recommend this product to anyone wanting to formula feed, and I really wish I had access to one with my first I think it would have saved us money and tears!
